'Make a Gift' Free for New Rochelle Children

Part of the BID Family Day series, the annual event allows children make three gifts for loved ones.

New Rochelle children ages 5 and up can go to the New Rochelle Public Library Saturday, Dec. 15 for the annual "Make a Gift to Give" fair.

The free event will begin at 12:30 p.m. and continue to 2:30 p.m. and is par the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District Family Day series.

Participants choose three gifts to make for family and friends, including tea light holders, candy jars, ceramic hotplates and calendars.

During the 2011 event, children could make a gift of Confetti Soup in a Jar, a present that provided a full meal.

Last year, Barbara Davis, the library's community relations coordinator, said the gift making day is one of the most popular events.

"We usually have several hundred children come through in the two-and-a-half hours," she said.

The children will be assisted in making the gifts by staff and volunteers from the New Rochelle schools staff, the city's Department of Parks and Recreation and the library.

After making the gifts, the children can wrapped them and put tags on them at the "Wrap It Up!" station.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
