Farmers Market, Jambalaya Brass Band and Corn

Here are a few activities around the area for the upcoming weekend.

1) New Rochelle Farmers Market
Where/When: Library Green, New Rochelle, Friday, Aug. 31 at 8 a.m.
Why go: Fresh fruits and vegetables, along with bread and nuts, are for sale at this weekly farmers market in front of the . From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., musician Phil Dollard will be on hand to entertain while you shop.

Pricing: Free. 

2) 6th Annual Free Jazz & Blues at Dusk Concert Series
Where/When: Yonkers Waterfront, 71 Water Grant St., Yonkers, Friday, Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m.
Why go: The Sixth Annual free "Jazz and Blues at Dusk Concert Series," presented by the Yonkers Downtown Waterfront BID, continues Friday, Aug. 31, with the Jambalaya Brass Band, performing songs from their CD It's a Jungle Out There. The concerts will be held at the Yonkers Amphitheatre at the Yonkers Waterfront. Each concert is presented from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Philipsburg Manor & Kykuit Visitor Center, 381 N. Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, Saturday through Monday, Sept. 1-3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
Why go:The Green Corn Festival explores the history and culture of the area’s Native American residents. Enjoy folk tales, song, and storytelling, and a participatory presentation of traditional Native American dance, plus open-hearth cooking demonstrations, games, live music, and hands-on craft activities for children. Pricing: 
General admission is $14; $12 for seniors; and $8 for children 3-17. Free for members and children under 3.

4) Second Miss Westchester & Miss Hudson Valley Pageants
Where/When: , 11 City Pl., White Plains, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 1-2 at 8 p.m.
Why go: New York Crown Productions presents the second Miss Westchester & Miss Hudson Valley Pageants to take place Sept. 1-2, 2012 at the White Plains Performing Arts Center. The four winners will go on to compete in the Miss New York USA® and Miss New York Teen USA® Competitions, the official state preliminaries to the prestigious Miss USA® and Miss Teen USA® Pageants.
Pricing: Free. 

5) Open Blues Jam at C.J. Cullens
Where/When:
 , 77 Pelham Rd., New Rochelle, Sunday, Sept. 2, 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. 
Why Go: New Rochelle's own Irish pub, CJ Cullen's Tavern, hosts an open blues jam every Sunday evening. PA, drums and amps will be provided.
Pricing: Free.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
