Thanksgiving Wishes From Cooper the Wonder Dog

In honor of Thanksgiving, Cooper the Wonder Dog asked if he could write this week’s post on what he’s thankful for. Of course, I said YES!

There are many things that a dog like me has to be thankful for. But here’s my short list:

1.       Long walks and jogs.   Our town is so pretty, especially in the early morning when it’s just me and the other dogs sniffing around, while our people try to hurry us along so they can get to work. I like taking my time, smelling everything, and seeing my friends. And a good jog always gets me ready for my day of playing!

2.       My toys. They’re all great, but nothing beats the tennis ball (the dog-friendly one, of course, so I don’t ruin my teeth!). I can chase it for hours, and then happily sit with it in my mouth for the rest of the day.

3.       Sundays.  I usually start it by crawling up on the bed and snuggling. Then it’s a little tv with my people, followed by a trip to the open field. It’s the highlight of my week! I’m learning how to catch the Frisbee and I’m so proud when I get it!

4.       The cat. Ok, I’d never admit it to her face, but she’s actually ok. Sure, she may hiss at me, and we may look like we don’t care for each other. But that’s really to keep up appearances. When everyone’s at work all day, we actually do hang out together. Sometimes we even share my comfy Orvis bed. But don’t tell anyone!

5.       Treats. I love to eat. I even remember the trainer in my kindergarten class telling my dad I was very “food motivated.” “What’s wrong with that ?” I ask. I especially love my chicken liver cookies (see dad’s previous entry for the recipe!). I just hope I get a little turkey on Thanksgiving!

6.       My family. I was abandoned as a puppy and brought to the New Rochelle Humane Society. I had parvo and was very sick. The vet came to look at me and took me to his home to help me get better. That was almost 3 years ago, and I’m still here. Who knew the vet would become my new dad? It was love at first sight. But it does remind me that there are lots of other dogs and cats like me that are spending this holiday season in shelters around the country. Sure, there are some GREAT folks who work at shelters, giving loving care to the residents. But nothing beats being in a forever home. And every night, I crawl onto the bed, and snuggle up with my family to say “thanks for giving me a loving home”.

No, Cooper, thank YOU for being part of our family. We are thankful every day to have you in our lives.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Give your dog or cat an extra hug on turkey day (but go easy on the turkey!)
