The Sound of Music Alternates Casts for Von Trapp Children

The Sound of Music, one of Broadway's most memorable hits, has been revived on stage at the Westchester Broadway Theatre in Elmsford and will run through August 11, 2013.

In alternating casts, twelve adorable youngsters play six of the seven Von Trapp children—only Molly Emerson who plays 16-year-old Liesl (the oldest of the seven) is actually old enough to appear in both casts.

Aubrey Sinn plays the young governess Maria and Matthew Shepard is Georg Von Trapp, a hero naval captain, widower and father of seven children.

The songs in this Rodgers and Hammerstein hit musical include Climb Ev'ry Mountain, Do-Re-Mi, Edelweiss, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, My Favorite Things, Maria and So Long, Farewell. The show was performed 1,443 times on Broadway and ran from November 16, 1959 through June 15, 1963.

The musical is based on Maria Von Trapp's memoir entitled "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers." The film version of The Sound of Music won an Academy Award in 1965 for Best Picture and starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

Also in featured roles in the Westchester Broadway Theatre production are Karen Murphy as Mother Abbess, Michelle Dawson as the captain's prospective bride Elsa, Cameron Bartell as 17-year-old telegram deliverer Rolf, Jamison Stern as Max, Bruce Rebold as Franz, Duane McDevitt as Herr Zeller, and Melinda Tanneras as housekeeper Frau Schmidt.

The six younger children are played by:

  1. Mollyjane Boyle, Olivia Fanders (Gretl)
  2. Evelyn Carr, Michelle Moughan (Brigitte)
  3. Harrison Cohen, Travis Ramirez (Friedrich)
  4. Jasmine Cores, Gianna Florio (Louisa)
  5. Hannah Moore, Grace Rundhaug (Marta)
  6. Matthew Quirk, Brandon Szep (Kurt)
The Sound of Music will be followed at the dinner-theater by Oliver (August 15 to September 8), Kiss Me Kate (September 12 to November 3) and Irving Berlin's White Christmas (November 7 to January 5, 2014).
