Mixed media “mashup” collage portraits, sculptures resembling suits of armor created from recycled materials and intricate headdresses are among the eclectic pieces that make up Works by Debra Hampton. The California-born artist is known for using unconventional media to explore issues of commodity, identity and appropriation – so successfully that her work is in the Museum of Modern Art’s Permanent Drawing Collection. Now Debra Hampton comes to New Rochelle’s Museum of Arts & Culture: ArtsFest (Sept. 24-25) marks the opening weekend for an exhibit of constructed pieces and works on paper by this exciting young artist. Ms. Hampton will be present at an Artist’s Reception at the MAC from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday.
The Museum of Arts & Culture, located in the new wing of New Rochelle High School, is the only Regents-chartered museum in a school in the state of New York. The MAC is funded by the non-profit New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence, a 501 (c)3 corporation, and is open to the public year-round. For more information visit the website at www.dbmac.org.
