The Last Jews of Libya -

Find out what's happening in New Rochellewith free, real-time updates from Patch.

In the years following 1948 more than 800,000 Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews left, fled, or were expelled from various Arab nations. They were either deported or forced by anti-Jewish law and pogroms to flee the Arab world.

In 1948, 36,000 Jews lived in Libya. Today, none do.  A thriving Jewish community existed whose roots go back to the 3rd century B.C.  The Last Jews of Libya traces the story of the Roumanis of Benghazi, Libya from Turkish Ottoman rule through the age of Mussolini and Hitler to the final destruction and dispersal of Libya's Jews in the face of Arab nationalism. The Roumani family was among the final Jews forced to leave Libya after 2,300 years of Libyan Jewish life.

Dr. Moshe Labi, a consultant on the film, who was born and raised in Benghazi, Libya, will join us. In the period of 1949- 1952 almost 125,000 Jews were airlifted from Iraq to Israel.  The Jewish community in Iraq had been one of the oldest and largest in the Arab world.   Among those thousands were Salah and Daoud Al-kuwaiti; Jewish-Iraqi musicians considered to be the creators of modern Iraqi music, and two of the greatest Arab musicians in history.

Iraq N’ Roll -

An awe-inspiring and compelling documentary based on the musical journey of Israeli rock star Dudu (David) Tassa, grandson of Daoud Al-Kuwaiti.  Dudu artistically incorporates his rock music talent with his grandfather’s Arabic folk music creating a successful global Middle Eastern rock genre and album “Dudu Tassa & The Kuwaitis”.
