Doughba Hamilton Caranda- Martin’s large scale multimedia pieces work with transglobal themes of love and war, antiquity and modernity, and racial identity. Incorporating traditional Liberian objects with a conceptual agenda, Caranda-Martin uses history as both an abstract and narrative tool for telling the stories of his experience escaping Liberian civil war by traveling to the United States as an adolescent. While Caranda-Martin's work is fiercely personal, his work speaks to a wider audience about the politics of diasporic identity- building amidst political violence. Ranging from intricate hypnotic large scale series to minimal watercolors, Caranda-Martin's body of work is diverse in material and form. The viewer is hit with a complexity of emotional and intellectual revelations about the human condition.

Educated at both the University of Liberia and the School of Visual Arts, Caranda-Martin has exhibited at Stuart Fine Art Gallery, Gale Martin Gallery, and Atmosphere Gallery in NYC. He has lectured at major universities and museums across the U.S. sharing his experience and artistic process.
