5 Things for the Week Ahead: MLK Jr. Day and Two Kinds of Jazz

What you need to know for the week of Jan. 16, 2012.

1. , 230 Main St, White Plains, will hold  from noon to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16. The concerts feature the Senakwami Chorus and solo pianists. The later concert will showcase only the solo pianists. The event will raise funds to buy books and films for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Library.

2. A concert of Brazilian Music will be presented at St. Paul's Church National Historic Site, 897 South Columbus Ave., Mount Vernon, at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18. Featured will be Mark Morganelli on flugelhorn and Brazilian jazz selections, accompanied by keyboard.

3. The Language Club of Westchester will meet and discuss anything and everything—in foreign languages—over dinner at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Casaletto Ristorante, located at 15 S. Central Ave., Elmsford. The club holds discussions in French, Spanish, Italian and German every week. The club also hosts tables for Hebrew, Russian, and Chinese language speaker once or twice a month. The dinner costs $18. The club meets every Wednesday. Call 914-592-5980 for more information. 

4. Legendary jazz guitarists Howard Alden and Bucky Pizzarelli perform on the community stage of the Picture House in Pelham on Thursday, Jan. 19. Alden was sought out by actor Sean Penn to prepare for his role in the Woody Allen film, “Sweet and Lowdown.” Pizzarelli also collaborated with Alden on the film's soundtrack.  The evening starts off with a complimentary wine reception at 7 p.m. and is followed by a screening of “Sweet and Lowdown”  at 7:30 p.m. There will be a question and answer discussion with Alden and Pizzarelli after the screening, followed by a performance by the two musicians of some songs from the film's soundtrack, as well as other original music.

5. The League of Women Voters of New Rochelle presents Coffee and Conversation at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20. It's an informal conversation over coffee and snacks sponsored with guests David Peters and Stephenie Tomei from Communities for All Ages, a national initiative promoting stronger communities through intergenerational programs. The session will be held at the , 1 Library Plaza, New Rochelle.
