Temple Israel of New Rochelle to Celebrate New Cantor

Friends, mentors and members of Kol Hazzanim will perform a wide ranging program.

A weekend of special events will celebrate the election of Tanya Greenblatt as the new cantor of Temple Israel of New Rochelle, including a formal installation service at Friday night’s Sabbath service, October 25th at 7:30 p.m. and highlighted by a gala concert, Sunday afternoon, October 27th at 4:00 p.m. Friends, mentors and members of Kol Hazzanim, The Westchester Community of Cantors, will perform a wide ranging program from varied musical genres.

Musical selections will range from classical Yiddish songs to Hazzanut (cantorial),  liturgical and contemporary Jewish music to Broadway tunes. The concert will be followed by a reception. Concert tickets are $18 for adults and $10 for children 12 years old and under.

“We enthusiastically welcome Cantor Greenblatt to Temple Israel”, Rabbi Scott B.Weiner, Senior Rabbi said. “We’re especially pleased, not only with her significant cantorial skills, but with her broad and varied spectrum of activities in other areas of Judaic learning.”

The guest cantors represent a wide geographic area indicative of Cantor Greenblatt’s previous affiliations. They include Judith Ovadia, Florida,: Don Rosensweig, Massachusetts; Sally Mess, Nyack; Sarah Zemel, New Rochelle; Hayley Kobilinsky, Armonk; Ellen Dreskin, Hebrew Union College; Jack Mendelson, White Plains; Fredda Mendelson, Larchmont and Erik Contzius, her predecessor at Temple Israel of New Rochelle.

Cantor Greenblatt has an extensive resume that covers both congregational and community activities. She joins the congregation from several posts in Florida, the most recent, Temple Beth Am in Jupiter.  She has also served as cantor at Temple Israel in Tallahassee and had previous experience in Merrick, NY, Norwalk, Ct. and Tenafly, NJ. She holds a BA in Music, Cum Laude, from Brandeis University and a Master’s of Sacred Music and Cantorial Ordination from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion. She has a long list of leadership roles, representation in publications and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. These include membership on the Boards of the American Conference of Cantors on which she just completed service as secretary and the Florida Organization of Cantors, as well as on a range of social action committees.

Her educational endeavors have been wide-ranging and extensive, teaching both musical and Judaic topics at every level.
