Squash, Melons Coming Into Local Farmers Markets

Amy Gardiner, Down to Earth Markets host, said we are moving into squash season.

"We are getting some pumpkins and butternut squash now," she said.

Also, cruciferous vegetables—such as cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli—are showing up in the markets.

Fall usually means apples, as well.

"They are starting to come in big time," Gardiner said.

The Down to Earth farmers markets—8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fridays in New Rochelle on North Avenue near the high school and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays in Larchmont at the train station parking lot—will be showcasing melons the third market of the month.

"I think I will doing a tasting of melons and squash," Gardiner said, "because some are fabulous raw," such as fairytale pumpkin.

She also said farmers market patrons can look forward to apple tastings in October.

New Rochelle also has the Grand Market from 9 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays at Library Green, which this week features the return of Ready Set Sharp. Bring your knives on the first Saturday of each month and get chopping.
