The New Rochelle YMCA and the College of New Rochelle are teaming me for new teen empowerment series next month.

Beginning in March 2012, the New Rochelle YMCA, with the assistance of the College of New Rochelle, will conduct a Teen Empowerment and Leadership Series consisting of lectures by prominent women influential in the business world.

The program, entitled YPowerUp, is designed to give teen girls (and boys next year) the opportunity to engage in dialogue about topics and interests which will help them realize their potential and may indicate the educational path they might choose. The series is expected to encourage youth development in such areas as technology, education and career planning, leadership, community service, money management and health.

Applications for the program are available to 10th, 11th and 12th grade students through the Pelham and New Rochelle high schools and require parental consent.  Or, contact the Y for further information at ypowerup@nrymca.org or Cheryl Sullivan at 914-632-1818.

The lectures and interactive workshops will take place at Romita Auditorium, The College of New Rochelle from 6:30 p.m to 8:30 PM.  Speaking at the opening lecture on March 8 will be Judith Huntington, President of The College of New Rochelle. On May 3, Mindy Meads, former CEO of Aeropostale, will speak to program participants. Additional speakers, including IBM CEO Ginny Rometti, will lecture at a later date to be determined.

This program is in keeping with the mission of the Y to enrich the lives of the children, families and communities it serves through programs that guide spirit, mind and body. In furtherance of that mission the Y offers its thousands of members coming from Pelham, New Rochelle, Larchmont and the Bronx the opportunity to participate in sports and social activities at a reasonable price.

There are child care services including after-school and Pre-K programs, the YMCA summer camp  (providing education, recreation and social activities for over 200 children for 8 weeks each summer), sports which include youth soccer, basketball and swim team and swim lessons for all ages. In Pelham the Y staff provide activities for elementary school students during their recess period at the Hutchinson and Prospect schools. Over 180 seniors are enrolled in the Silver Sneakers wellness program providing exercise and social activity. The Y has a 26 yard × 6-lane swimming pool, a full-court size gym, 2 racket ball courts as well as weight and cardio rooms (a brand new cardio facility was recently installed).

At this time the Y is also beginning its annual Strong Kids fund raising program in which volunteers will reach out to the various communities served by the Y.  Donation information as well as membership applications are always available at the Y’s headquarters at 50 Weyman Avenue, New Rochelle where donations can also be sent.  Contact the Y for further information at info@nrymca.org.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
