[VIDEO] New Rochelle Lights Holiday Tree, Menorah

Annual ceremony is presented in cooperation with the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce.

The holiday season has officially begun in New Rochelle with the annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony.

The event, held at Memorial Plaza at the corner of Main Street and Memorial Highway, features caroling by the Songcatchers and an appearance by Santa Claus.

New Rochelle Parks and Recreation Commissioner William Zimmermann said the event was in cooperation with the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce and kicks of the holiday shopping season.

The Christmas tree, which was brightly lit, stood next to a menorah. Also on display was a creche.

Zimmermann said the tree was donated by a city couple, Ed and Kathleen Murphy. The tree was slated to be cut down anyway because it blocked a neighbor’s window, so they decided to offer it to the city.

"We are hoping it starts a new tradition," he said, where a tree is given to the city for the season.

Smiling children surrounded Santa Claus, who arrived on a fire truck, as he handed out candy canes and posed for pictures.
