New Rochelle Library Has End of Summer Party

Two parties were held for children who participated in the summer reading program.

The New Rochelle Public Library threw two celebrations for youngsters who participated in the Summer Reading Program. The events featured entertainers who had the children participate and have fun.

The parties took place Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday's event featured entertainer Kurt Gallagher, who sang, make jokes and got the children jumping around. For Wednesday, David Engel's Pirate School! got the standing-room only crowd laughing and clapping.

Kathleen Cronin, head of children's services at the library, said this year saw 841 children read 8,675 books, which is more than double last year's.

Students participated in either kindergarten or pre-K age groups, where they were likely read to, or grades one through five where they selected what they wanted to read. Kronin didn't have an explanation for the increase over last year.

Students were allowed to read whatever they wanted—there was no list—and in whatever language they prefered. They were awarded certificates at the end of the performances and refreshments were served.

That is a remarkable number of children who were reading or being read to AND a remarkable number of books.

It seemed to me the key point of moving the City Yard from the waterfront was to open up theRead More waterfront and turn that run down and obsolete yard into a public park overlooking Long Island Sound. The westside site was the most cost effective place to move the yard. Not ideal, but no real alternative has been proposed. I don't think this has much to do with racism. All races can enjoy more of the waterfront. Any development around it will add to our tax base

Ms. Aronow, The issue is that an alternative has been suggested, Ward Acres, as it is much largerRead More and strategically beneficial for the City of New Rochelle. I don't think the recent public discussions has resulted in unanimity in terms of the waterfront being an entirely public venue for all races to enjoy.
