[VIDEO] Update: New Rochelle 14-year-old Wins Soap Box Derby Race

About 30 children from all over Westchester competed to be sent to the finals in Ohio this summer.

11:10 a.m., June 11, 2012: Alexis Jimeniz, 11, from Mount Vernon, won the Stock Division race Sunday. Melissa Costa, 14, of New Rochelle, led the pack in the Super Stock Division. They will be going to Akron, OH, for the national finals.

Quaker Ridge Road was turned into a speedway Sunday when the Uniformed Fire Fighters Association Local 273 held the 10th annual All-American Soap Box Derby.

Organizer Rich Bongiorni said about 30 children participated in the gravity-powered race.

The two winners—one in Stock Division and one in Super Stock Division—will be sent to Akron, OH, for the finals, where they can win scholarships and prizes.

The cars are made from kits sold by the All-American Soap Box Derby.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
