Heim said the money raised is sorely needed by the New Rochelle Humane Society, Pet Rescue of Larchmont and the Mount Vernon Animal Shelter and will be used for food, veterinarian services and staff costs.

Phil Reisman, columnist at the Journal News acted as master of ceremonies. He said it was people's responsibility to speak for animal who cannot speak for themselves.

It's a beautiful day to further such a  wonderful cause," Reisman said, reminding the crowd that it was their responsibility to speak for those who cannot speak.

Before and after the walkathon, dogs and their humans could get food, buy baked goods from Girl Scouts, browse the vendors and see agility demonstrations.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
