Hounds on the Sound to Raise Funds in a Walk Sunday

The New Rochelle Humane Society serves as animal control for 19 Westchester communities.

Love to be outdoors with your pooch? Then head to Glen Island Park Sunday for the  fifth annual Hounds on the Sound dog walk-a-thon and festival.

Event co-chairwoman Dianne Heim said, besides being a fundraiser, "it's a very, very happy day."

She said there will be about 45 vendors plus food sellers.

"We are hoping for over 1,000 people," Heim said, adding there were about 500 dogs at the 2012 event.

The money raised from the walk-a-thon goes to the New Rochelle Humane Society and Pet Rescue of Larchmont, after a percentage is taken off for the Mount Vernon Animal Shelter.

"It is really a regional event," Heim said.

Registration begins at the park, off Pelham Road in New Rochelle, at 10 a.m. The walk begins at 11:30 a.m.

Scott Shannon, of WPLJ's Scott and Todd in Morning Show, will cut the ribbon to kick off the walk.

Heim said there will be other activities, such as a crafts table, facepainting and games for the children.

There will also be doggie-related contests like musical chairs where both the dog and its owner have to sit down and best kisser.

Heim said Port Chester Obedience will be running an agility course again this year, but new for 2013 will be a chance for dog owners to run through a course with their dogs themselves.

"We just want people to come and have a good time," she said.
