Giant Fireball: What the (HECK) Was That?

Reports of fireball come in from across the mid-Atlantic states.

If you were outside last night at about 8:30 or so, maybe you saw it: A giant fireball hurtling across the region.

The American Meteor Society has received 71 reports of the fireball, which appears to have been over Lancaster County in Maryland, but plenty visible in New York.

"smoke trail from east to west in a straight line directly overhead- across most of sky," reported Bruce G. from Mount Kisco, describing his observation on the meteor society's fireball log report page. "Moon made visible (blueish trail). Only saw a brief glimpse of a what looked like a fireball but the trail was overhead and seemed to last minutes. Did not look like a jet contrail."

Reports of sightings also came from New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
