Fleur-de-Lis Competition Part of New Rochelle's 325th Anniversary

Decorated Fleur-de-Lis sculptures will be springing up in the downtown area this fall.

As part of the 325th Anniversary of the settling of New Rochelle, the New Rochelle Council on the Arts, the Downtown Business Improvement District and the city will commission 10 to 15 artists to decorate 5-foot-tall, pre-fabricated glass-fiber reinforced plastic Fleur-de-Lis sculptures.

One artist—or team—will be selected for each free-standing sculpture. Artists age 16 and older can submit their ideas by September 1. For complete instructions and to apply, visit www.newrochellearts.org.

Arts council President Judith Weber said the intent of the competition was to showcase local talent and celebrate the city's history.

"The Fleur-de-Lis shape was chosen to represent the city's French heritage," she said. "We look forward to seeing what themes local artists bring to their interpretations."

Artists with the winning designs will receive one of the 5-foot-by-5-foot forms and $300 to cover costs of implementing their designs. The works are to be completed in October and will be installed around downtown New Rochelle.
