Chinese New Year Celebrated at New Rochelle Library

The free events are part of the BID's Family Days Go Global series during the 325th Anniversary of New Rochelle.

Free activities at the New Rochelle Public Library will celebrate Chinese New Year Tuesday, Feb. 19.

In connection with the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District Family Days Go Global for New Rochelles 325th Anniversary, the library will present two programs heralding the Chinese lunar new year.

From 10:30 a.m. to noon, pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade children will be able to make a dragon puppet and a traditional red Chinese lantern.

Beginning at 2 p.m., there will be a free, 45-minute performance by the New York Chinese Cultural Center in the Ossie Davis Theater.

The program, which is appropriate for all ages, will feature costumed dancers performing the Lion Dance, a Monkey King Demonstration from the Peking Opera, the Handkerchief Dance the Mongolian Dance and the Ribbon Dance.

The program is made possible by the BID inconjunction with the library, the New Rochelle School District, the city's Department of Parks and Recreation and the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library.

The library is presenting a week of free activities during the February school vacation the week of Feb. 18.
