Caregiver Conference Offers Advice, Support

The conference was held at the Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center.

The Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center in New Rochelle was the site Monday of a free conference for seniors, family and caregivers. Presented by ElderServe Safe Center for Seniors, the conference was really about taking care of the caregiver.

The topics discussed in presentations and break-out workshops included getting support and resources and strategies for care. Christine Sotmary, executive director of Caregiver Access, had advice for caregivers staying healthy, saying they need to take a little time for themselves.

Among the information people could get at the conference was about making the home a safe environment for the elderly. Delali Goka of A Healthy You explained that home safety is a major factor for caregivers and their charges. She said a little education can make things much better..

Melody Keel, health and wellness coordinator for ElderServe, said she hoped caregivers at the conference would at the very least realized that they don't have to go through it alone, that there are support networks and resources available to them.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
