Beach Shabbat, Free Jazz, Gay Pride

Here are a few activities taking place this weekend in the Sound Shore area.

1) Shabbat ShaBeach
Where/When: , 1 Le Fevres Ln., New Rochelle, Friday, Aug. 17 at 6:30 p.m.
Why go: Temple Israel of New Rochelle will celebrate Shabbat on the beach Friday at Five Islands Park. From 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., there will be refreshments and hor d'ouevres—you can bring your own dinner, if you like—followed by the sunset service at 7:30 p.m. Seating will be provided for those who need it. But if you'd like to sit on the beach, bring your beach blanket. This event will take place rain or shine. In the event of rain, the temple will use the indoor pavilion. RSVP to the temple office at 914-235-1800.

2) 6th Annual Free Jazz & Blues at Dusk Concert Series
Where/When: Yonkers Waterfront, 71 Water Grant St., Yonkers, Friday, Aug. 17 at 6:30 p.m.
Why go: The Sixth Annual free "Jazz and Blues at Dusk Concert Series," presented by the Yonkers Downtown Waterfront BID, continues Friday, Aug. 17, with Lao Tizer, keyboardist and recording artist. His over-the-top band captivates audiences of all ages and musical tastes in seamless and soulful grooves, spirited improvisations and an extreme sense of melody. The concerts will be held at the Yonkers Amphitheatre at the Yonkers Waterfront. Each concert is presented from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Pricing: Free.

3) Sculpture Garden Exhibit at Wildcliff
Where/When: , 44 Wildcliff Rd., New Rochelle, Saturday, Aug. 18 at noon.
Why go: The Sculpture Garden exhibit at Wildcliff is open to the public every Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Available for group tours and private tours on weekdays by appointment only. View works by sculptors B.A. D'Alessandro, Bernard Rowan, Jodi Carlson, Denis Folz, David Boyajian, Marcia Spivak and Michael Poast. Visit incomingtideentertainment.com for more details.

Where/When: 287 Ridge Rd., Hartsdale, Saturday, Aug. 18 at noon.
Why go: Westchester County’s annual LGBT Pride celebration will take place at Ridge Road Park on Saturday, Aug. 18 from noon to 8 p.m. This will be the fourth year for the county’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered residents to gather to enjoy a fun-filled, family-friendly day. Westchester Pride’s new home in Ridge Road Park is perfect for a “family picnic” styled event, complete with sandpit volleyball, outdoor games, and a playground for children. There will be a men’s health fair called “Unzipped,” organized by the MSM Coalition and sponsored by the Hispanic Federation, where men of all ages will be able to access basic health screenings.
Pricing: Suggested donation for adults, $10; children and those going only to the health fair, free. 

5) Open Blues Jam at C.J. Cullens
Where/When:
 , 77 Pelham Rd., New Rochelle, Sunday, Aug. 19, 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. 
Why Go: New Rochelle's own Irish pub, CJ Cullen's Tavern, hosts an open blues jam every Sunday evening. PA, drums and amps will be provided.
Pricing: Free.

It seemed to me the key point of moving the City Yard from the waterfront was to open up theRead More waterfront and turn that run down and obsolete yard into a public park overlooking Long Island Sound. The westside site was the most cost effective place to move the yard. Not ideal, but no real alternative has been proposed. I don't think this has much to do with racism. All races can enjoy more of the waterfront. Any development around it will add to our tax base

Ms. Aronow, The issue is that an alternative has been suggested, Ward Acres, as it is much largerRead More and strategically beneficial for the City of New Rochelle. I don't think the recent public discussions has resulted in unanimity in terms of the waterfront being an entirely public venue for all races to enjoy.
