Art Auction to Benefit New Rochelle Community Garden

A silent auction and breakfast will raise funds for mosaic benches.

An silent art auction is set to benefit Ward Acres Community Garden with the creation of mosaic benches.

The exhibit, called "Art for Public Art" is on display at on North Avenue, features works by professional and amateur artists who are either gardeners or are connected to the community garden in some way.

All works are available for sale via silent auction, including ceramics, photography, jewelry, paintings and sketches.

Bids for the auction will conclude at 9 a.m. Saturday a breakfast fundraiser at AJ's Burgers. The cost of the breakfast is $20 per person. Tickets may be purchased at www.wacg.net.

Funds raised from the auction and the breakfast will help create a mosaic public art project—a collaboration of the community gardens, the New Rochelle Council on the Arts and the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle—at the gardens.

Mosaic benches, created by artist Sarah Coble with the assistance of middle-school children, will be installed.

Community gardens steering committee member Maggie McGovern said that mosaics were the perfect medium for art in the garden.

"The community garden truly reflects the mosaic of people who make up the diverse community of New Rochelle," she said.

"We are thrilled to spearhead a program that brings together so many different people of all ages and backgrounds from throughout the community," said arts council President Judith Weber
