TRI COUNTY SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FAIR

The K-12 Tri-County Science & Technology Fair is annually organized by the Putnam Children’s Discovery Center and the White Plains Research Science Department for the purpose of rewarding students who placed first in their local K-8 science Fairs and High school students who are recommended by their High School Science Department or principal.  Fair participation is open to public, private and home schools located in Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam Counties.  The registration period ends on April 1. This year’s Fair will take place at White Plains High School 550 North St in White Plains, NY on April 26, 2014.

 

The Tri County Science Fair is the only regional fair in our area with three levels: Elementary, Middle and High School.  The top three students on the High School level will have an opportunity for further competition in the New York State Science Congress. The top High school winner will receive the Marilyn Reiner Science in Education Award. The overall top middle school winner from grades 5-8 will receive The Judge Edith Miller Excellence in Education Award. The top students in middle school (grades 6-8) will have an opportunity to compete in Broadcom Masters a national competition. Cash and prizes are award to the students who place first; with plaques going to first, second and third place winners in grades 5-12. Grades K-4 will receive excellent outstanding ribbons and a special fun item.

Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas; please email Volunteer@DiscoveryCtr.org along with available hours:  choose two or more hours anytime between 8 AM-4PM on April 26th.

To enter students in the Tri County Science & Technology Fair, a principal or science department chair should contact Janice Newman at JNewman@DiscoveryCtr.org. An elementary/ middle school  K-8 student must win a local fair to qualify for the event. The categories for K-8 are Biology, Chemistry, Earth/Space Science, Engineering/Technology, Environment, Health/Medicine, Math/Computers, and Physics. The categories for 9-12 include the K-8 categories plus Psychology and a science department chair can recommend a High school student for participation. It is recommended that HS students have research projects, to gain access to NYS Science Congress. Demonstrative projects are allowed but not eligible for further competition. . For the Second year, the Fair welcomes PepsiCo Research and Development as their grand sponsor. Corporate and individual sponsorship opportunities are still available, please email JNewman@DiscoveryCtr.org.  The Fair is also in need of qualified judges to review the student projects. Scientists, Doctors, Nurses, Engineers and Psychology professionals, retired teachers and college students with a science major are encouraged to contact the judge’s team at pcdctcsf@gmail.com.
