The College of New Rochelle Castle Gallery Presents Memento

Exhibit to Run from January 28 through March 30                                              

New Rochelle, NY, January 21, 2014 – The College of New Rochelle Castle Gallery presents Memento, an art exhibit that draws from the Christian tradition of the memento mori, an artistic or symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death.

On display January 28 through March 30, the exhibit features depictions of memento mori, which emphasize Heaven, Hell, and salvation of the soul in the afterlife. Memento mori originated in Christian Europe and ultimately spread to Colonial America and beyond, even influencing the Mexican Day of the Dead imagery.

“The work in Memento is personal, but easily pertains to every single one of us as a reminder of the ephemeral aspect of human life. Memento mori is an acknowledgement of life’s short span,” said Katrina Rhein, Director of the Castle Gallery.

Featured artists include: Mayumi Amada, Travis Head, Vesna Jovanovic, Gina Occhiogrosso and Alice O’Neill.

Artist Mayumi Amada explains how her piece,You Will Not Be Forgotten, is meant to be reflective artwork. “The origin of our life is an egg, and the relay of life has been made through eggs. These flowers created by egg cartons represent our faded out grandmas and our maternal ancestors who were once in bloom of their life and gave us life.”

The exhibition is on display from Tuesday, January 28, 2014 to Sunday, March 30, 2014. A reception will be held on Sunday, February 9 from 2-4 p.m.

The Castle Gallery is located at 29 Castle Place on The College of New Rochelle campus. The Castle Gallery opened in Leland Castle on the Main Campus of The College of New Rochelle in 1980. For over 30 years, it has been a significant educational and cultural resource for both the CNR community and the community at large, presenting a wide range of original exhibitions. Hours: Monday - Friday: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday: 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. The gallery is closed on Mondays and major holidays.
