TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP OFFERED BY HOLOCAUST CENTER

FOR SUMMER 2014 TOUR OF GERMANY AND POLAND

The Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center (HHREC) is offering a curriculum development scholarship for local middle and high school teachers that covers most costs of a 15-day summer tour of Germany and Poland. The July 2 – July 17 itinerary includes stays in Berlin, Weimar, Leipzig, Nuremberg, Dresden and Krakow, where the teachers and HHREC leaders will tour such Holocaust sites as Oskar Schindler’s Factory, the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps and the Wannsee House.  Historic sites covered on the educator tour will include Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Wall Memorial, the Nuremberg Courthouse and Jewish Quarter of Krakow. The deadline to apply is this Friday, January 31st.

Teachers who qualify will have the opportunity to meet with top government officials, historians and human rights leaders, and will develop lessons derived from their experiences to incorporate into their curriculum.  Scholarship winners will attend one pre-trip seminar in the spring of 2014 and two post-trip sessions in fall 2014 and be required to make a presentation at their school or at a local professional conference. The tour cost, including airfare, ground transportation, meals and guided tours, is $2,000, thanks to a substantial subsidy from HHREC.  To apply, contact Julie Scallero, jscallero@hhrecny.org.
