Family Fun at ArtsFest

There’s a lot for children and families to enjoy at this year’s ArtsFest (September 28th -29th): In addition to the art exhibits and performances around New Rochelle and Pelham there are events and activities geared especially toward the younger set. For starters, on Saturday, September 28th the Lincoln Avenue Arts & Culture Fest will take place along Lincoln Avenue from 11:30 am to 5 pm, offering lively dance performances, drumming, exhibitions, music, a cultural bazaar, and a tour of the GROW Lincoln Park community garden. From 12:30 to 4:30 pm the Huguenot Children’s Library (794 North Avenue at Eastchester Road; 632-8954;   www.partnershipforthehcl.org) will once again host LEGO Day, an afternoon of creative building with the colorful plastic blocks provided by Block Stars. The free event is sponsored by the Partnership for the Huguenot Children’s Library. Also on Saturday, the Songcatchers After-School Music Program, directed by Sr. Beth Dowd, will provide the instrumental accompaniment for an Intergenerational Concert at Garito Manor (180 Union Avenue; 636-4200) from 1 to 2 pm. The performers will include singers from the Hugh A. Doyle Center and Garito Manor.

On Sunday, September 29th two locations will spotlight young artists and performers: From 1 to 4 pm the Ursuline Outreach Center (138 Centre Avenue; 633-7298) will host an exhibit and performances by young people, and from 2 to 5 pm youth art and music will be featured at St. Gabriel’s Church. Also on Sunday the Children’s Acting Academy will offer free acting workshops  -- including diction, voice training, improvisation technique and monologue delivery – at Westchester Yoga Arts (49 Lawton Street; 848-8121    www.westchesteryogaarts.com) from 2 to 5 pm.

Adding to the fun this year artist Charles Fazzino has created an ArtsFest Scavenger Hunt: Pick up a free card at one of 18 venues, and add stickers from each venue you visit. Once you’ve collected 10 you are eligible to win an original 3-D limited edition work of art by Charles Fazzino: Simply fill in your name and address and leave the stamped card in a specially marked box at one of the 18 participating venues. The winner will be notified at the conclusion of ArtsFest.
