Deborah S. Delisle, Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, to Speak at The College of New Rochelle

The College of New Rochelle will host Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education Deborah S. Delisle on March 20, when she speaks about, “The Federal Education Perspective: Where We Are and Where We Are Going .“ The event is co-sponsored with The Lower Hudson Council of Administrative Women in Education and The Westchester Putnam School Boards Association. Educational administrators and officials from across New York State are expected to attend.

Delisle will discuss critical topics in education today including the implementation of the Common Core, the development of Pre-K programs, the college to career pathway, standardized assessment and more. After her presentation, Delisle will respond to questions from the audience.

“We welcome this dialogue with Ms. Delisle because of our long history of developing the educators who are now making an impact on students in the New York metro area, in both teaching and administrative positions,” commented Dorothy Escribano, Provost & Sr. VP for Academic Affairs at The College of New Rochelle.

Nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the US Senate in April 2012, Delisle now plays a pivotal role as principal advisor to the US Secretary of Education on all matters related to pre-k, elementary and secondary education. Additionally, Delisle directs, coordinates and recommends policy for programs designed to assist state and local educational agencies with improving elementary and secondary school student achievement. Prior to joining the Department, Delisle served as Ohio’s 35th State Superintendent of Public Instruction (2008-2011) where she lead a successful application for the US Department of Education’s Race to the Top Program, which secured $400 million to boost student achievement through innovative programs and numerous statewide reforms.  Delisle has received numerous honors and awards highlighting her creativity and innovation to her calling and service as an educator.

The first Catholic college for women in New York State, The College of New Rochelle was founded in 1904 by the Ursuline Order.  Today, it comprises the all-women School of Arts & Sciences, and three schools which admit women and men: the School of New Resources (for adult learners), the School of Nursing and the Graduate School.  The main campus of the College is located in lower Westchester County, 16 miles north of New York City.  The College maintains five other campus locations in New York City for the School of New Resources in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan.  Visit the College’s website at www.cnr.edu.
