Renowned violinist Elmar Oliveira will perform Violin Concerto in E minor, op.64 when the Westchester Chamber Symphony presents an all-Mendelssohn program on Sat., May 5, 2012 at 8 p.m. at Iona College’s Christopher J. Murphy Auditorium, 715 North Ave., New Rochelle.

Oliveira remains the only American violinist to win the Gold Medal at Moscow's Tchaikovsky International Competition. He was also the First Prize winner at the Naumburg International Competition and the first violinist to receive the Avery Fisher Prize. In addition to performing with many of the world’s best known orchestras, he is also an active recording artist. His repertoire stretches from classic violin standards to new pieces by contemporary composers.

In addition to Oliveira’s Concerto, the WCS program also includes Scherzo: Midsummer Night’s Dream, op.61 and Symphony no.4, op.90, A major (Italian).

Tickets are $50 for general admission, $40 for seniors and $15 for students. For more information: info@westchesterchambersymphony.org, www.westchesterchambersymphony.org, or (914) 654-4926.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
