New Rochelle Outdoor Family Film Screens 'Wizard of Oz'

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my, will be on the big screen in the Library Green Aug. 4.

And your little dog, too.

The family movie classic The Wizard of Oz will be shown under the stars in New Rochelle's Library Green Thursday.

Presented by the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District and the , the free viewing of the 1939 film will begin at 8:45 p.m.

At 8 p.m., there will be a costume parade and a contest for the best movie-inspired costumes. People should bring a blanket or lawn chairs.

The Wizard of Oz was based on the works of L. Frank Baum and was directed by Victor Fleming. The film stars Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Frank Morgan, Billie Burke and Margaret Hamilton.

It won Oscars for Best Song—"Over the Rainbow"—and for Best Original Music Score. E.Y. Harburg wrote the lyrics; Harold Arlen, the music. The movie was nominated for Best Picture of the Year, but lost the Academy Award to Gone With the Wind.

In the event of rain or strong winds, the screening will take place in the Ossie Davis Theater in the library. There are limited seats available in the theater, so complimentary tickets will be handed out in the library on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are not necessary for the outdoor screening.
