New Rochelle Art Gallery Holds Earth Day Workshops

Families visited the transFORM Art Gallery in New Rochelle and in honor of Earth Day worked with recycled materials.

Children ages 5 to 8 participated in workshops at transFORM Art Gallery led by artist Lisa Mee Doherty. They created art made from recycled materials.

Lisa Cooper is the owner and curator of Elisa Contemporary Art. Cooper explained the significance of using art as a learning tool.

“Art has an amazing power to create self-confidence in someone that is young,” she said.

Artist Adriana Rostovsky led a subsequent workshop for kids 9 and up.

Following the crafts, kids presented their artwork to the group. Four-year-old twins, Ophelia and Maybellene Kelly, drew pictures of their backyard and a park inside a circle representing the globe.

The twins’ father, John Kelly, believes it is important to have art workshops like these for kids.

“Art has to be taught, encouraged and embraced,” he said. “When you start at a young age it will lead to a more fruitful and interesting life.”

The New Rochelle gallery began as showroom called transformHOME in 2006. Andreas Messis, Co-Founder of transFORM, decided to make the showroom into an art gallery as well. Today, the transFORM Art Gallery showroom is designed with vignettes that display artwork.

Kara O’Neill is the curator of the transFORM Art Gallery, which showcases artwork from local and international artists.

Earth Day, which is Monday, April 22 this year, is an annual event that brings attention environmental issues.
