New Lights Add Up Savings for New Rochelle [VIDEO]

The new LED lights will be in the Intermodal Transportation Center Parking Garages and New Roc City Garage.

Installation of new LED lighting at the Intermodal Transportation Center Parking Garages is almost complete and the transition at New Roc City Garage will soon begin.

Mayor Noam Bramson and other city officials held a press conference Thursday that demonstrated the installation and touted the benefits.

"From an environmental and energy-savings standpoint, this is win-win," Bramson said. "And at a time of fiscal challenge, it is especially important for us to pursue every opportunity for efficiency."

Besides being brighter, the new lights use less electricity. City Manager Charles Strome III said the lights use 60 percent electricity than the ones they replaced.

Between the two garages, yearly energy cost savings are estimated to be $160,000. The project is funded by a loan from the New York Power Authority, so the initial savings will be reduced because of the loan repayment.

In years one through seven, the City can expect to save between $5,000 and $25,000 each year, depending on interest rates. Over the 20 year lifetime of the lights, taxpayers will save approximately $2 million.
