County: Stay Out of Long Island Sound

County health officials advised people to stay out of the Long Island Sound in New Rochelle Monday and today after a small amount of liquid sewage trickled into the estuary.

Residents are still being advised to stay away from the Long Island Sound in New Rochelle after a small amount of sewage leaked into the water Monday morning.

A small amount of liquid sewage backed up into a pipe on 474 Pelham Road and flowed into the basement of the building before leaking to a storm sewer that leads to the Long Island Sound, according to the Westchester County Department of Health. Officials said the amount of sewage that flowed into the estuary was similar to the flow of water from a hose that was left on accidentally.

County environmental officials have said that the sewer discharge has stopped.

The City of New Rochelle, which owns the sewer, and the building owner are working together to
resolve the problem that led to the sewer backup.

As a precaution, county health officials are asking people to avoid direct contact with the water at the following New Rochelle locations: Wright Island Marina, Castaways Yacht Club, Imperial
Yacht Club, Neptune Boat Club, New York Athletic Club, Snug Cove and Huguenot Yacht Club, Beckwith Pointe and Glen Island Park.

Check back for more details as they become available.
